Piedmont Lady Lions prepping for national tournament

By Staff reports
The Piedmont College women's basketball team secured a second straight automatic bid to the NCAA Division III National Tournament this past weekend by defeating Maryville College and winning the Great South Athletic Conference conference title.

The Lions were led in the championship game by Beth Adcock, a junior from Flowery Branch High School, with 20 points. Nikki Sosebee, a senior from Jackson County (and conference player of the year), chipped in 16 points and 12 rebounds. Freshman Laura Simmons, from Johnson High, had 15 points and senior Sheena Trimiar, from Habersham Central, had 13 points and earned conference MVP honors.

Jamie Childs-Purdy -- GSAC Coach of the Year -- is preparing her squad to play state rival Oglethorpe University in the first round of the national tournament at Thomas More College in Crestview Hills, Ky.

Oglethorpe beat Piedmont 86-67 in November of this season. Oglethorpe boasts a national ranking of 24th and is second in the south region -- Piedmont is seeded fifth.

The two schools will play at 5:30 p.m. Friday.
