Class AA quarterfinals: Wesleyan girls heading to Macon after taking down Buford

ROME -- Buford started strong but could not finish as the Lady Wolves fell to No. 1 Wesleyan 64-42 Saturday night in the quarterfinals of the Class AA girls state basketball playoffs.

It was the fourth loss of the season to Wesleyan for Buford, which both play in Region 6-AA. Wesleyan advances to the Final Four in Macon for the seventh time in the last eight years.

Buford led 8-3 after the first quarter and had Wesleyan in foul trouble. But Wesleyan used a 15-0 second quarter run to take a an 18-8 lead and never looked back. Buford cut the lead to 21-16, but Wesleyan closed out the second quarter with a 10-1 spurt to take a 31-17 halftime lead.

Buford cut the lead to 33-23 early in the third quarter but again Wesleyan answered, this time with a 13-2 run for a 46-25 lead.

Abby Johnson led Buford with 16 points. The key was Wesleyan's defense against Buford's leading scorers Jocelyn Danley and Blanche Alverson, who average over 30 points a game combined. Danley managed just eight points while Alverson was held to seven points. Alverson also had nine rebounds.

Erin Hall led Wesleyan with 21 points. Aysia McKenzie had 11 points and Grace Leah Baughn 10 for the Lady Wolves.
