Tennessee's men's basketball team has surged to the top of The Associated Press college basketball poll for the first time on the strength of Saturday night's victory over Memphis in a numbers 1-vs.-2 matchup.

The 25-and-2 Volunteers are a runaway choice, named first on 69 of the 72 ballots cast by a nationwide panel of media members. The Tigers, who lost for the first time this season after opening 26-and-0, slip to Number-2.

North Carolina, the Number-1 team in the preseason poll and for the first 10 weeks of the regular season, remains third. The Tar Heels received two first-place votes, while UCLA, which jumps from sixth to fourth was named first on one ballot.

Texas moves up two spots to fifth, followed by Kansas, Duke, Stanford, Xavier and Wisconsin.

Georgetown is 11th, followed by Indiana, Louisville, Butler, Connecticut, Purdue, Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, Michigan State and Drake. The last five ranked teams are Marquette, Washington State, Kent State, Gonzaga and Saint Mary's.
