South Carolina receiver suspended after arrest

CAYCE, S.C. -- South Carolina freshman receiver Dion Lecorn was arrested and charged with simple possession of marijuana at an apartment complex here, police said Monday.<br /> <br /> Lecorn, 19, and two other men told police they had been smoking marijuana Sunday night in a car at the complex, according to a police report. An officer patrolling the complex smelled marijuana when she came over to the car to tell the men to turn down their music, the report said.<br /> <br /> When questioned about the smell, one of them told her had thrown a marijuana cigarette from the car, the report said. Police said they found a burnt marijuana cigarette in the ashtray during a search and Lecorn, of Ocala, Fla., indicated it was his.<br /> <br /> It was not immediately clear whether Lecorn had an attorney. Telephone and e-mail messages left for Lecorn were not immediately returned Monday.<br /> <br /> Lecorn was released on his own recognizance after spending the night in jail.<br /> <br /> Lecorn and a second player in the car, freshman receiver Matt Clements, have been suspended from the team, according to a statement from coach Steve Spurrier.<br /> <br /> Lecorn was fourth on the team with 27 catches for 315 yards and three touchdowns in 10 games last season, while Clements played in two games and had no catches.<br /> <br /> Cayce is about 10 miles southwest of Columbia, where the Gamecocks play.
