South Carolina receiver arrested

CAYCE, S.C. -- South Carolina freshman receiver Dion Lecorn was arrested and charged with simple possession of marijuana at an apartment complex here, police said Monday.

Lecorn, 19, and two other men told police they had been smoking marijuana Sunday night in a car at the complex, according to a police report. An officer patrolling the complex smelled marijuana when she came over to the car to tell the men to turn down their music, the report said.

When questioned about the smell, one of them told her had thrown a marijuana cigarette from the car, the report said. Police said they found a burnt marijuana cigarette in the ashtray during a search and Lecorn, of Ocala, Fla., indicated it was his.

It was not immediately clear whether Lecorn had an attorney. Telephone and e-mail messages left for Lecorn were not immediately returned Monday.

Lecorn was released on his own recognizance after spending the night in jail.

He has been suspended from the team, athletics spokesman Steve Fink said.

He was fourth on the team with 27 catches for 315 yards last season. He had three touchdowns in 10 games.

Cayce is about 10 miles southwest of Columbia, where the Gamecocks play.
