Prep gridiron stars earn one last honor from GACA

By Staff reports
Though National Signing Day was already over, there was one last award for area football stars such as Tavarres King, Jaybo Shaw and Omar Hunter to pick up on Thursday when the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association released its all-state football teams.

King, who set a state record for receptions (100) and reception yards (1,641) this season at Habersham Central, was named the Class AAAA offensive player of the year. The University of Georgia signee -- who is already enrolled in Athens -- helped lead the Raiders to back-to-back Class AAAA quarterfinal appearances in his junior and senior seasons.

Hunter, meanwhile, was named the Class AA defensive player of the year. A defensive tackle, the 6-foot, 300-pound Hunter terrorized opposing offenses in 2007 and helped lead the Wolves to their first state title since 2003 and their fifth overall. Hunter signed to play for the University of Florida on National Signing Day.

Several Hall County prep stars earned their way onto the Class AAA North team, including Georgia Tech signee and Flowery Branch quarterback Shaw. North Hall's Hunter Wolf (RB) and Fabian Jackson (DB) joined Shaw on the first team, while Gainesville's Gerald Ford (WR) -- a Valdosta State signee -- also earned a spot. Chestatee junior linebacker Chase Vasser, who recently committed to Georgia for the 2009 signing class, was also named to the first team.

Stephens County running back Tauren Poole was named Class AAA's offensive player of the year.

In Class AAAA, Habersham Central linebacker Daniel Franklin, an Oklahoma signee, made the first team, as did teammate and offensive lineman Gabe Irby -- who signed to play for Wake Forest.

Buford dominated the Class AA team, placing five players on the North squad, including Towey Hosch (QB), Demetris Murray (RB), J.J. Miller (OL), Melvin Harris (WR) and T.J. Pridemore (LB).

In Class A, Commerce quarterback Reuben Haynes and teammate Cohen Cooke (WR) were honored, as was Jefferson linebacker Mack Rakestraw.
