San Francsico Dons head coach Eddie Sutton joins 800 club

By The Associated Press
MALIBU - University of San Francisco coach Eddie Sutton joins only a handful of coaching legends who have won 800 Division I college basketball games. The Dons rode a 55-point second half to rally past Pepperdine 85-82 to give Sutton his 800th victory on his fourth try at the plateau.

The 71-year-old Sutton joins Bob Knight, Dean Smith, Adolph Rupp and Jim Phelan in the 800 club.

Sutton spent most of his 36-year career at Creighton (KRAY'-tuhn), Arkansas, Kentucky and Oklahoma State before coming out of retirement in December to coach the Dons.

San Francisco rallied from a 19-point second-half deficit. Danny Cavic hit the big shot, a three-pointer with just under 15 seconds left. USF is 6-and-15 this season. The Dons are 2-and-7 under Sutton.
