Georgia and Pennsylvania groundhogs disagree

By The Associated Press
UNDATED - Six more weeks of winter.

That's the Groundhog Day prediction today from Pennsylvania's Punxsutawney Phil, but Georgia's General Lee sees things differently.

The Pennsylvania rodent claims he saw his shadow this morning. Georgia's claims he did not.

Thousands gathered in Punxsutawney to hear a reading of Phil's forecast during the town's 122nd Groundhog Day celebration.

Meanwhile, Lilburn, Georgia's groundhog is predicting an early spring.

Awoken by a crowd of hundreds of fans and TV cameras, General Beauregard Lee poked his head from his antebellum mansion at 7:58 Saturday morning and did not see his shadow.

Yellow River Game Ranch spokeswoman Stefanie Reeves said General Lee took his time to leave his mansion, as sunrise was at 7:34.

Tradition holds that it means the region will have an early spring. Georgia would have been in for six more weeks of winter if the 15-pound furry prognosticator had seen his shadow on his veranda at Yellow River Game Ranch in the northeast Atlanta suburbs.

This is the third year in a row that the southern varmint's prediction differed from Punxsutawney Phil's.
