Georgia Capitol Notes: Days 6-10

By The Associated Press
ATLANTA - Georgia Capitol Notes for Days 6-10 of the 2008 session of the Georgia General Assembly.

HEADLINES

Georgia lawmakers voted to re-elect the chairman of the state transportation board despite the very vocal objections of House Speaker Glenn Richardson. North Georgia lawmakers decided to keep Mike Evans around for another five year term, and later legislators from southeast Georgia voted to let Raybon Anderson of Statesboro keep his seat. Both were targeted by House Speaker Glenn Richardson last year when they voted to make Gena Abraham the new commissioner of the state Department of Transportation. Days earlier, a transportation committee released a long-awaited report that failed to endorse one of two competing tax plans aiming to relieve Atlanta's gridlock.

ODDS ENDS

The Senate slapped fellow Republican Gov. Sonny Perdue with a rare rebuke, approving Georgia's first veto override in 34 years. The Senate voted 47-7 to approve the override, one of 12 the House passed on the opening day of the session.

The House passed legislation that would allow Georgia residents to stop credit reporting agencies from releasing their information without written permission. Consumers would be charged up to $3 for each security freeze, and an additional $3 each time they want to lift it permanently or ``thaw'' their accounts temporarily when applying for credit.

Lawmakers carved out time to voice their displeasure with college football's ``dysfunctional'' Bowl Championship Series system, passing a resolution that urges the NCAA to create a playoff system for college football.

Expanding a Senate bill, the House passed a measure that allows Georgians with a conealed weapon permit to carry their guns at public transportation facilities, houses of worship and restaurants that serve alcohol. It now moves to the Senate, where it will likely be bottled up barring a breakthrough.

A state commission that would recommend new charter schools would be created under a House bill approved. The measure could open the door for more of the tuition-free schools throughout Georgia.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

``In this business, you win some and you lose some. I don't know of anything that he's won yet.'' Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle, on House Speaker Glenn Richardson's political fortunes this year.

DAYS IN SESSION

30 days remain in the 40-day session.

LOOK AHEAD

Senate lawmakers are expected to take up a water plan that could allow the state to invest in more reservoirs.

Legislative committees will likely start considering a host of new tax plans.
