Gwinnett Police radio to use Forsyth tower

By Staff
LAWRENCEVILLE - Gwinnett Police have struck a deal with their counterparts across the river in Forsyth County to improve their radio coverage in the Chattahoochee River basin area below Buford Dam. However, the Forsyth County Commission has yet to act on the matter.

Equipment for the new digital radio system that Gwinnett is installing will be located on an existing tower on the Forsyth side instead of purchasing land and building a new tower in Gwinnett.

Gwinnett Police Chief Charles Walters said, "By sharing this tower, we're saving taxpayer dollars and still getting the coverage we need for our new communication system."

The county budgeted more than $11 million this year for the new county-wide 800 MHz radio system that allows Gwinnett public safety staff to communicate with officers in surrounding jurisdictions.

Board Chairman Charles Bannister said, "This agreement is another example of how we're finding ways to reduce costs without lowering the quality of the service we provide."

Jodi Gardner, a spokeswoman for the Forsyth County Commission, said Thursday morning the issue is on the Forsyth commission's Dec. 9 work session agenda.
