Clemson goes from bowl questionable to Jan. 1 game

By The Associated Press
COLUMBIA, S.C. -- In just four days, Clemson has gone from wondering if they would make the postseason to playing in the Gator Bowl on New Year's Day.

The invitation was extended Wednesday to the 7-5 Tigers. They likely will be matched up with 8-4 Nebraska. Hundreds of Huskers fans have already booked flights to Jacksonville, Fla., even though the invitation probably wont be extended until Sunday.

Clemson fans remember the Tigers only game ever against Nebraska well. They beat the Huskers 22-15 in the Orange Bowl to win the 1981 national championship.

Clemson needed a win over South Carolina on Saturday just to be eligible for a bowl. Now the Tigers are playing in their first Jan. 1 bowl since losing to Virginia Tech 41-20 in the Gator Bowl eight seasons ago.
