Downed power lines close Green Street

By B.J. Williams
GAINESVILLE - When an oversized vehicle tried to make its way down Green Street during lunch hour Thursday, the result was downed power lines and scattered power outages.

Gainesville Fire Chief Jon Canada said his department received two conflicting reports, one saying that a mobile home was being moved down the street, the other that a tractor trailer was traveling down the road. Whatever the case, the vehicle snagged power lines in front of Rudolph's restaurant on Green Street at Ridgewood Avenue.

"Georgia Power has told me that power is off around the area from The Times north on Green Street with the neighborhoods off of Green Street being affected," said Canada.

The accident happened around 12:30, and Canada said he expected power to be restored in 30 to 45 minutes.

Both outside lanes of Green Street will remain closed while Georgia Power and the DOT work on the problem.
