New report on Georgia job losses

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
ATLANTA - Georgia job losses over the past year now total 61,300, or 1.5 percent.

State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond says this is the largest October-to-October decline in jobs ever recorded. The over-the-year job losses came across-the-board in all major sectors, Thurmond said. But manufacturing, construction, retail trade and private employment agencies were especially hard hit.

Dalton (2,900), Valdosta (1,200) and Atlanta (44,000) led the way. Gainesville, Macon and Athens had the fewest job losses (each with 100) during the period.

The state Labor Department also reports that the unemployment rate in Georgia in October reached a 16-year high of 7 percent. (See separate story.)
