Va. Tech has clear favorite in Miami-Ga. Tech game

By The Associated Press
BLACKSBURG, Va. -- When Georgia Tech takes the field against No. 23 Miami on Thursday night, the Yellow Jackets will have an unusual fan base cheering them on: Virginia Tech's football team.

The Hokies are squarely in Georgia Tech's corner because if the Jackets beat the Hurricanes, Virginia Tech still has a chance to win the Atlantic Coast Conference's Coastal Division title.

``Everybody on our team is excited and paying attention,'' Virginia Tech rover Dorian Porch said. ``I'm sure everybody will be watching that game.''
Even Hokies coach Frank Beamer is a Yellow Jackets fan.

``You want that to happen,'' said Beamer, adding that, of course, the Hokies must primarily focus on getting ready to play Duke on Saturday.

To have a shot at winning the division, the Hokies (6-4, 3-3) need the Hurricanes to lose before they win against the Blue Devils (4-6, 1-5).

``It might give us a little bit more motivation, especially if Georgia Tech ends up winning on Thursday,'' linebacker Purnell Sturdivant said.

The race would get even more interesting heading into the final weekend if Virginia (5-5, 3-3) also beats Clemson on Saturday, setting up a possible winner-take-all matchup between the archrivals for the division crown. Oh, and Miami would have to lose again, at North Carolina State.

Guard Nick Marshman said he's keeping his focus on Duke.

``Anything can happen,'' he said. ``We need to do what we need to do.''
