UGA's Green named freshman of the week, closing in on records

By staff reports
ATHENS -- University of Georgia freshman flanker A.J. Green has been named the Southeastern Conference Freshman Player of the Week, according to an announcement by the league office on Monday.

Green, a 6-foot-4, 200-pound native of Summerville, S.C., caught his second game-winning touchdown in a row during No. 13 Georgia's 17-13 road win over Auburn. Green snagged a 17-yard pass from junior Matthew Stafford midway through the fourth quarter to clinch the Bulldogs' ninth win of the season.

A week before, Green hauled in an 11-yard score from Stafford with less than
two minutes left in the game as the Bulldogs beat Kentucky 42-38 in Lexington.

Averaging 16.2 yards per catch on five receptions for 81 yards against the Tigers, Green is attempting to become the first freshman to lead the league in receiving yards per game since 1999. Through 11 games, he leads the SEC with an average of 80.6 yards per game and he has the most yards (887) of any receiver in the league. Green also has seven touchdowns this year.

Green is also looking to become the first Bulldog to lead the SEC in receiving
since 1994 (Brice Hunter) and the first freshman to top the conference in receiving yards per game since 1999. He is also only 113 yards away from becoming only the second Georgia receiver in history to register 1,000 yards in one season (Terrence Edwards-2002).

This is Green's second SEC honor this year after also being named the SEC Freshman Player of the Week following the Arizona State game.

After having an off-week or Nov. 22, the No. 13 Bulldogs welcome Georgia Tech to Sanford Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 29. All Georgia games are broadcast live on the Bulldog Radio Network on WDUN AM-550. The radio audio also can be heard worldwide on both georgiadogs.com, the official website of UGA Athletics, and on XM satellite radio.
