More tech college mergers in Ga.

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
ATLANTA - Jasper-based Appalachian Technical College is being added to the merger of Chattahoochee and North Metro Tech.

This will create the largest technical college in the state with seven campuses and more than 15,000 traditional students. It is one of several mergers than have been announced in recent weeks.

Meanwhile, North Georgia Tech in Clarkesville is adding Fannin County to its Service Delivery Area (SDA). But Mike Light, spokesman for the Technical College System of Georgia, said that does not mean students from Fannin must attend North Georgia Tech.

Light said students in the state are permitted to attend the school of their choice. He said one of the reasons the change was made was because "the people of Fannin County requested it." SDAs, he said, are for "boundary purposes only."

North Georgia Tech, in addition to Clarkesville, has campuses in Blairsville and Toccoa.
