GAINESVILLE - The University of Georgia is in the final stages of buying the commercial TV station in Toccoa - and radio station WDUN in Gainesville has proposed a partnership with the new owner.
Dr. E. Culpepper "Cully" Clark, Dean of the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at UGA, briefed the Gainesville Rotary Club Monday on plans to purchase WNEG. Dr. Clark said UGA will assume control of the TV station next Wednesday and move the studios to Athens next summer.
Clark said, "through this acquisition we can start generating a lot of content and sharing it with existing media. We want soon for northeast Georgia to be the healthiest, best informed, and most prosperous set of communities in the United States. The best medicine in the United States is practiced in teaching hospitals were the clinical is married with the research. We're going to accomplish the same thing with media."
Meanwhile, John "Jay" W. Jacobs III, President and CEO of WDUN, said Tuesday "we've made a partnership proposal with Georgia and look forward to future developments."
