Buford dominates Avondale, 49-7

BUFORD - It was a bigger, stronger, better Buford Wolves team that hit the field this week, compared with last week, as the Wolves rolled past Avondale 49-7 at Tom Riden Stadium in Buford.

Last week, Buford led Decatur 3-0 at halftime. This week, the Wolves led Avondale 35-0 at the interval.

Four yards later, Cody Getz rushed into the Avondale end zone for a 7-0 Wolves lead.

It was all downhill from there for the No. 1 ranked Wolves (5-0, 3-0 Region 6-AA).

Minutes later, Buford running back Storm Johnson scored from 10 yards out for a 14-0 lead over the Blue Devils (0-5, 0-2). Jessel Curry then tacked on another score for a 21-0 first quarter lead.

Getz and Curry managed one more score each in the second quarter, as the Wolves pulled ahead 35-0 before the half.

The Wolves opened the second half with the ball, eating up 5:33 on a drive that ended with a 10-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Michael May to Josh Rudnik and a 42-0 lead.

The Wolves defense put up a brick, holding the Blue Devils to 140 yards of offense and sacking Dawson seven times with six different players, losing a total of 39 yards.

The Blue Devils did slip through the Wolves defense late in the fourth quarter, when, on fourth and 22, Dawson broke a 24-yard run followed by a 32-yard pass to Courtney Brantley in the end zone.

Immediately following the Avondale touchdown Buford took back the points they gave up as Alex Barton returned a 96 yard kickoff finalizing the night for the Wolves as they win it big 49-7.

"I was impressed. We were quick, we came out with a great effort," Wolves coach Jess Simpson said. "But there is another level we want to achieve and you certainly don't want to be perfect this early in the season."

Buford heads to DeKalb County next week to take on Cross Keys in Region 6-AA.
