MARIETTA, Ga. - A man who was arrested for being involved in the so-called ``Barbie Bandits'' bank heist has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after being convicted of drug charges.
Cobb County Superior Court Judge Mary Staley sentenced Michael Darrell Chastang came yesterday after he was convicted of trafficking Ecstasy in a non-jury trial. The judge sentenced him to 30 years with 15 to serve and fined him $25,000.
Authorities arrested the 28-year-old last year along with Ashley Miller and Heather Johnston.
The two young women made headlines after they were videotaped wearing sunglasses and laughing February 27th as they appeared to steal nearly $11,000 from a Bank of America in Acworth. But authorities say what at first looked like a bank robbery turned out to be a theft involving a complicit teller.
They were arrested days later.
Authorities said Chastang connected the women with the bank teller and afterward the four split the money.
The drug charges against Chastang came after Cobb County police, who were trailing Miller and Johnston, stopped them in Douglas County. When police searched Chastang, they found nearly 33 grams of Ecstasy pills.
Johnston, who testified yesterday for the prosecution, pleaded guilty to the bank theft and marijuana possession charges last year. She is awaiting sentencing.
Miller, Chastang and the teller, Benny Herman Allen III, are awaiting trial on the bank theft charges.
