Girls prep basketball: Gilmer knocks off East Hall

RABBITTOWN -- After a stellar first-half, the East Hall High girls basketball team stumbled in the second half, falling to sixth-ranked Gilmer 53-50 on Tuesday night in Valhalla.

The Bobcats (13-2, 1-0 Region 7A-AAA) chipped away at a 12-point Viking (9-4, 0-1) lead after the first quarter and took over in the third quarter.

Sarah Jones keyed Gilmer's offense with a game-high 23 points, including five 3-pointers. Kylie Smith also scored 14.

Jessica Blackwell led East Hall with 18 points, including three 3-pointers, while Sada Wheeler scored 14 points -- though the Bobcats' zone defense held Wheeler scoreless in the second half.

Wheeler finished the game just seven points away from 1,000 career points.

East Hall plays again on Friday when the Vikings play host to Lumpkin County.

Gilmer plays at White County on Friday.

JASPER -- Trailing by seven points at the start of the fourth quarter, the fifth-ranked Gainesville High girls basketball team needed a spark at Pickens High on Tuesday night.

Sophomore post Jaymee Carnes provided the flame.

Scoring 16 points in the period, Carnes helped the Lady Red Elephants (11-3, 1-0 Region 7B-AAA) to a 29-point burst as Gainesville pulled out a 59-54 win.

Carnes, who finished with 22 points and 13 rebounds, did most of her damage from the free throw line in the fourth quarter, sinking 12-of-14 charity shots.

Kiana Glasper also finished in double digits for the Red Elephants with 15 points. Glasper also came up with five steals.

"All of those steals were big," Gainesville coach Manson Hill said.

Lindsey Logan scored 22 points for Pickens (7-7, 0-1), while Lindsey Hammontree added 10.

The Lady Dragons pulled ahead at the start, scoring 14 points in both the first and second quarters to build a 28-16 halftime advantage. Pickens scored just nine points in the third quarter but still led 37-30 heading into the fourth.

Gainesville plays host to West Hall on Friday. Pickens travels to West Forsyth on Friday.

WHITE COUNTY 48

CLEVELAND -- The Lady Trojans used a 21-point, third-quarter blitz to push past the Lady Warriors on Tuesday night in Cleveland.

Trailing 28-20 at the half, North Hall (10-4, 1-0 Region 7A-AAA) clamped down on White County's offense, allowing just six points in the quarter, as the Trojans pulled ahead 41-34.

Letiecia Davenport and Elizabeth Williams led North Hall's offense, with 17 points apiece.

Williams played a key role all over the court, adding 11 assists, six steals and six rebounds.

Amanda Watkins scored 24 points to lead White County. Morgan Ledford and Lindsey Wiley each scored nine points.

The Trojans play host to Chestatee on Friday, while White County plays host to Gilmer.

GAINESVILLE -- The Lady Lions picked up another key subregion win on Tuesday night at home, disposing of Commerce 56-31.

Lakeview (4-5, 2-0 Region 8N-A) got 13 points apiece from Louisa Jacobs and Maddie Haymore in the win.

The Lions return to action Friday when they play host to Towns County.

LUMPKIN COUNTY 51

DAHLONEGA -- The Lady War Eagles fell behind early but charged into the lead with a 17-point third quarter and held on for the win on Tuesday night in Dahlonega.

Lumpkin County took a 16-8 lead after the first quarter, but Chestatee (6-9, 1-0 Region 7A-AAA) stormed back in the second quarter, scoring 19 points to pull within 29-27 at halftime. The War Eagles then pulled ahead in the third quarter, building a 44-34 advantage.

Chestatee's Peyton Robertson recorded a double-double, scoring 17 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Kasey Smith also had 12 points.

The War Eagles travel to North Hall on Friday. Lumpkin County travels to East Hall.

NORCROSS -- The fourth-ranked Lady Wolves couldn't find a way past the second-ranked Lady Spartans on Tuesday night in Norcross.

Greater Atlanta Christian (13-2, 7-0 Region 6-AA) jumped ahead 14-12 after the first quarter and never relinquished the lead.

Blanche Alverson and Jocelyn Danley each scored 16 points to lead Buford (11-2, 5-1).

Briana Jordan poured in a game-high 20 for the Spartans. Chaney Means also scored 13 and Angelica Wilcox added 12.

Buford plays host to Avondale on Friday.
