Members locked out of Uptown Fitness Center

By Jerry Gunn
GAINESVILLE - Members of a popular downtown Gainesville fitness club are surprised and bewildered at the club's sudden and unexplained closing - wth manyof them holding memberships they've already paid for.

Uptown Fitness on Bradford Street was supposed to reopen January 2nd after New Year's Day.

It did not reopen and members who are showing up at the door want to know why not, why they are locked out, why no one is here and why no one is answering the phone.

One of them is Michael Subacki.

"We just don't know what happened," Subacki said. "A lot of people with memberships here would like to know what happened.

"If something happened where they had to close the gym I hate it for them but they should have at least let everybody know what was going on."

Subacki said he came last Wednesday to start working out and the doors were closed with no explanation.

Subacki said his wife and children also use the gym.

Other members say they are still owed services here, and with the doors locked they don't have access to their lockers.

Downtown Gainesville businessman David Rigg said he signed up for a yearly membership last October.

He showed up with his gym bag for a noon day work out Monday and found the doors locked.

"I'll probably contact my attorney and let him take a look at it and do a little investigating on my own," Rigg said. "I've had no communication whatsoever so this is a shock to me."

Uptown Fitness owner Kieth Allison could not be reached for comment.

Falcon Parkway Fitness spokesman John Kyre in Flowery Branch said Monday Uptown Fitness memberships will be honored until the end of this month, at which time the exact status of Uptown Fitness will be determined.
