ATLANTA - The governor's task force on education finance wants Georgia's public school systems to be allowed to use state funds with fewer restrictions.
The panel has met for more than three years but still has not decided what to do about the outdated state funding formula. That is supposed to be the group's primary focus.
The task force is scheduled to finalize recommendations for Governor Perdue today, a week before the start of the next legislative session.
Group members are expected to suggest creating more flexible spending rules for school systems, which state lawmakers may consider during the next few months.
The current formula was created in 1985 to determine how much state money schools should receive to educate every student.
The proposal calls for school systems to agree to meet more rigorous academic standards in exchange for freedom from mandates, such as strict class-size rules, and flexibility to spend state dollars where they choose.
