Pendergrass wreck victims identified

By By The Associated Press
PENDERGRASS - Two of the four children killed in a wreck on I-85 in Jackson County Saturday were from Barrow County.

Six-year-old Lauren Gargiulo and her brother, 11-year-old Nicholas, of Statham, died when the car they were in was struck head by another near Pendergrass.

Two children in the second car, both from Stamford, Connecticut, also died in the crash.

Jackson County deputy coroner Dean Stringer says the cars were carrying two families with two children in each vehicle. Police say a Chevrolet Impala traveling southbound on the interstate crossed the median and struck a white Ford Fusion - in which the Barrow County youngsters were passengers - which was traveling in the opposite direction.

One of the four children was confirmed dead at the scene. Two more were flown to Scottish Rite Hospital in Atlanta, where they later died.

The fourth child died at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.

The blocked traffic on I-85 in both directions for several hours.
