ATLANTA - WSB-TV reporter Dale Cardwell has spent his career asking questions. Monday, he got a taste of what's it's like to answer them as the veteran television journalist announced he'll challenge Republican incumbent Saxby Chambliss for the U.S. Senate.
Cardwell told reporters he is in for a tough fight.
Running as a Democrat, he cast himself as a political outsider with a record of exposing corruption during his years as an investigative journalist. He said he'd bring that same sense of accountability and independence to Washington.
He blasted Chambliss as ``a bought and paid for special-interest pawn.''
Cardwell is a six-time Emmy award winner and former Atlanta Press Club journalist of the year. He said he would not accept political action committee money in the race. While the move could allow Cardwell to claim the moral high ground, it could also make it difficult for him to compete in a statewide race against an incumbent who already has two-point-eight (m) million dollars in the bank for re-election.
Cardwell's entrance into the race sets the stage for a possible Democratic primary with DeKalb County Chief Executive Officer Vernon Jones. Jones has formed an exploratory committee for a Senate run and has been acting like a candidate but has not yet made a formal announcement.
