GDOT suspending road work for four days

By by Ken Stanford
ATLANTA - This should be the last day until Tuesday you have to dodge road construction crews and equipment and deal with lane closures in the Oakwood/Chestnut Mountain area.

In fact, the Georgia Department of Transportation is scaling back its construction projects statewide from 5:00 Friday morning until 10:00 Monday night because of the holiday weekend.

The Oakwood/Chestnut Mountain area is the scene of a mammoth reconstruction of the Exit 16 interchange at I-985 and Mundy Mill Road and the widening of Winder Highway just to the south of the exit.

GDOT notes that some work may continue on lesser-traveled state and local system roads and that incident- or emergency maintenance-related lane closures could become necessary on any route.

In addition, officials say if you are planning a trip that will take you through southeast, south and coastal Georgia over the weekend, be aware that heavy smoke from several wildfires and shifting winds are periodically reducing visibility on highways throughout these areas. Overhead and portable changeable message signs have been posted to advise of current and anticipated conditions. Motorists should exercise extreme caution at all times, particularly in smoke events and early mornings where smoke and fog may mix. Drivers should be prepared for possible long delays, unscheduled road closures and detours.

Georgia DOT encourages you to access the department's Navigator travel services at its website (www.georgia-navigator.com) for detailed fire, lane closure, construction and traffic incident information; and also to use the site to establish a personal "My NaviGAtor" report for personalized, real-time traffic information. There is also a GDOT traffic and construction hotline that can be called toll free, 24 hours, seven days a week, at (404) 635-6800, or you can call *DOT on a Verizon or Cingular cellular phones to speak with a Transportation Management Center operator and find out about road conditions, etc.
