DEMOREST - Up to thirty gallons of diesel fuel spilled into Habersham Mills Lake in Demorest Wednesday night.
Habersham County Fire Chief Jeff Cain said there was a rupture in the fuel tank on a boat, which caused the diesel fuel to flow to the bottom of the boat. Once the fuel went into the bottom of the boat the bilge pump activated, pumping the fuel into the lake.
Chief Cain said 20-30 gallons of diesel went into the lake.
In addition to fire department personnel, the Baldwin Hazmat (hazardous materials) trailer responded and the state Environmental Protection Division was notified.
The lake is being dredged.
