ConAgra: 3rdQ profit of $192M despite Peter Pan recall

By by The Associated Press
OMAHA, Neb. - ConAgra Foods reports that it earned $192.6 million in the third quarter despite a recall of all of its peanut butter products from its Georgia plan after they were linked to a salmonella outbreak.

But the recall and efforts to prevent similar problems will keep the company's Peter Pan peanut butter out of stores at least through late May.

ConAgra has yet to resume production at its only peanut butter plant, which is in Sylvester in south Georgia. The company has said the recall would cost $50-$60 million.

This year's results were considerably better than a year ago, when ConAgra posted a loss of $25.2 million because of one-time restructuring charges.

The Omaha-based company said its earnings amounted to 38 cents per share in the quarter that ended February 25, versus a loss of five cents a share a year ago. Its latest results included one cent a share from discontinued operations.

Revenue rose to $2.92 billion -- from $2.86 billion a year ago.
