Former Ga. Tech player Mike Mooney dies in his sleep

<p>A standout lineman on Georgia Tech's 1990 national championship football team has died at his home in Westminster, Calif., the university announced on its web site.</p><p>Mike Mooney was 37 years old.</p><p>Mooney was a starting offensive tackle for Tech in 1990 and 1991 when he earned All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors and also served as captain of the Yellow Jackets.</p><p>One of his former teammates, Jim Lavin, told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that Mooney died in his sleep last Friday "and right now we just don't know what happened."</p><p>Mooney played high school ball at South Carroll High in Sykesville, Md., and was among the first players Bobby Ross signed after becoming coach of the Yellow Jackets in 1987.</p><p>He played in the National Football League for the Houston Oilers and San Diego Chargers.</p><p>Mooney is survived by his wife Gina, two sons Thomas and Robert, daughter Charlette and brother Craig. Services were scheduled for Wednesday in Cypress, Calif.</p>
