Savannah State hires Robert Wells as head coach

SAVANNAH - Savannah State hired Benedict College defensive coordinator Robert Wells was named as head coach on Saturday.

Wells replaces second-year coach Theo Lemon, who was fired in November. The 18-year coaching veteran was also the football marketing director for one season at Benedict.

In 2006, Wells served as the general manager for Arena football team, the Augusta Spartans. He spent four seasons as the defensive coordinator at South Carolina State.

As a player, Wells played fullback and wide receiver at Furman. He was a member of the Furman team that won the Division II championship in 1988.

Wells, 39, inherits a team that finished with a 1-9 record this season.
