Polk County police chief resigns

By The Associated Press
ROME, Ga. - Polk County Police Chief Billy Wills Junior has resigned after a federal grand jury indicted him with possessing stolen firearms and lying to federal agents.

County Manager Clinton Lester says Assistant Chief Kenny Dodd was appointed yesterday to be police chief.

Lester says Dodd will hold that position until further notice.

The 48-year-old Wills was indicted by the federal grand jury on Tuesday in Atlanta.

He was released on $10,000 bond after arraignment Wednesday before a U.S. magistrate in Rome.

U.S. Attorney David Nahmias says it is the second indictment in the past week involving firearms illegally taken by an officer of the Polk County department.

The latest alleges that Wills ``knowingly received, possessed, concealed, stored and disposed of two firearms that he knew were stolen from the Polk County Police Department.''

The indictment says Wills lied to federal agents during two separate interviews concerning whether he received the guns without following his department's policies for the disposition of evidence and other property.
