Heatley scores twice as Senators beat Thrashers 7-3

By The Associated Press
OTTAWA - Dany Heatley scored twice, and Antoine Vermette had a goal and two assists in the Ottawa Senators' seven-to-three victory Saturday over the Atlanta Thrashers.

Nick Foligno, Chris Kelly, Joe Corvo and Andrej Meszaros also scored for the Senators, who played their first home game in two weeks. Jason Spezza had two assists.

Ottawa won its fifth straight following a seven-game losing streak. Atlanta has dropped four in a row.

Ilya Kovalchuk scored twice for the Thrashers, and Eric Perrin added Atlanta's other goal. Marian Hossa had two assists in the loss.

Johan Hedberg started for Atlanta but he was pulled in the second period after allowing five goals on 24 shots. Kari Lehtonen took over in net and gave up two goals on 19 shots.

Martin Gerber made his second straight start for Ottawa and wasn't tested often as the Thrashers had only six shots in each of the first two periods. He was busier in the third when the Thrashers had 13 shots and enjoyed nearly four minutes of 5-on-3 power-play time.

Two full minutes of that two-man advantage came when Heatley and Corvo took penalties, but as soon as they got out of the penalty box they were sprung on a 2-on-1 break. Heatley converted a pass from Corvo to give the Senators a 6-3 lead.
