New initiative launched in the war on drugs

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
GAINESVILLE - Work has begun in Gainesville toward developing a new weapon in the war on drugs.

A number of organizations are coming togethre to form a Drug Free Communities Coalition.

The initiative will target the reduction of substance abuse among youth.

The coalition will be created along the guidelines created by the 1997 Drug Free Communities Act. The legislation encourages and supports community coalitions whose mission was to reduce substance abuse among youth.

The coalition will gather information and develop strategies to implement a community-wide effort to protect our children from the toxic culture of drug usage. In the area of drug prevention, it has become clear that no one entity can prevent drug usage. However, combined efforts have proven successful.
