Two ex-officers involved in woman's shooting to report to jail

By The Associated Press
ATLANTA - Bond has been revoked for two former Atlanta police officers who pleaded guilty to their roles in a botched drug raid in which a 92-year-old woman was shot to death in her home last year.

Gregg Junnier and Jason R. Smith have been ordered to turn themselves in to federal custody by December third.

The U-S Attorney's Office says U-S District Judge Julie Carnes issued an order yesterday revoking bond for Junnier and Smith, following the defendants' plea agreements and a motion by the government.

An attorney for Smith, John Garland, says defense lawyers consented to the bond revocation. He says it was always expected that the defendants would turn themselves in after cooperating with prosecutors for a time.

Prosecutors say Junnier and Smith will be sentenced in federal and state court after they finish their cooperation. Garland estimates it could be six months until sentencing.

Junnier and Smith pleaded guilty in April to a single federal charge of conspiracy to violate a person's civil rights, resulting in death, in the November 2006, fatal shooting of Kathryn Johnston. They also pleaded guilty to state manslaughter and other charges.

The charges followed a ``no-knock'' drug raid on Johnston's home. An informant had described buying drugs from a dealer there, police said. When the officers burst in without warning, Johnston fired at them, and they fired back, killing her.
