Gainesville school officials consider budget cuts to help fund new elementary school

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
GAINESVILLE - Gainesville Schools Superintendent Steve Ballowe told school board members Monday night some financial rearranging in the form of budget cuts will make sure Mundy Mill Academy gets built.

Dr. Ballowe said based on current revenue projections there's not enough funding to build and open the new school by August 2009.

To make that happen, Ballowe recommended some additional cuts in the existing budget.

"So that when you combine the state growth monies with our SPLOST monies we would have enough money to continue with the Mundy Mill Academy project," Ballowe said.

Ballowe said that means about $2.8-million worth of projects to be delayed, but elementary school space is at a premium and the new elementary school is badly needed because of school population growth.
