Humphrey leads Lady Dogs to win over George Mason

By The Associated Press
ATHENS - Georgia's inside-outside combo of Tasha Humphrey and Ashley Houts scored 21 and 17, respectively, to lead the No. 9 Lady Dogs to an 84-56 victory over George Mason on Sunday.

Houts also had five assists and seven steals for Georgia (2-0).

Lateisha Wade led George Mason (0-1) with 12 points.

George Mason scored only one basket in the first seven minutes of the game, a 3-pointer by Casey Quigley, but Georgia failed to capitalize.

Two free throws by Houts gave the Lady Dogs a 10-3 lead with 13:10 to go in half, but George Mason tied the game at 15-15 with 8:30 to go in the half when Ward hit a short jumper from the baseline.

Georgia finished the half with an 11-4 run, started by Angela Puleo's 3-pointer with 4:36 go in the half and capped by her transition basket to account for the halftime margin of 35-24.

The Lady Dogs scored the first 11 points of the second half to expand the lead to 46-24 when Houts stole the ball and beat the Patriots down the floor for a layup.

Houts' defense ignited a seven-point trip for Georgia early in the second half. She stole a Patriot pass but was fouled on the layup attempt. After she made her two free throwns, Georgia pressed, and Houts again stole the ball, tipping it to Humphrey, whose no-look pass set up Christy Marshall's layup as she drew a foul. Marshall missed her free throw, but Georgia rebounded, and Brittany Carter nailed a 3-pointer to push the Georgia lead to 60-34 with 14:16 remaining.

George Mason never threatened again. Led by Angel Robinson with 10, Georgia barely won the rebounding battle, 44-42, but scored 25 points off of 26 Patriot turnovers.
