Fire claims 60-year-old Norcross lumber business

By The Associated Press
NORCROSS - Firefighters battled high winds, frigid temperatures and a dangerous storm of ash in a towering blaze Wednesday evening that claimed a 60-year-old Norcross lumberyard.

The fire destroyed the Norcross Supply Co., a family run business since 1946 that specialized in cedar wood.

Witnesses reported the fire at 6:04 p.m. and little remained of the lumberyard two hours later.

``The wind was against us and the dryness of the lumber was against us. It overwhelmed us in a hurry,'' said Gary Moon, a battalion chief with the Gwinnett County Fire Department.

No injuries were reported and investigators still are determining the cause of the fire.

The lumberyard was closed when the fire happened.
