Police seek 'Grandpa Bandit' for bank heists in Tenn., Suwanee

By The Associated Press
SUWANEE - A man in his mid-60s who authorities have nicknamed the "Grandpa Bandit" is being sought for bank heists in Georgia and Tennessee.

Authorities said a man with a baseball cap and "numerous wrinkles on his face" robbed the Tennessee Members First Credit Union on Thursday in Knoxville, Tenn. The same man is believed to have robbed the SunTrust Bank on Oct. 24 in Suwanee, Ga., according to the FBI's Knoxville division.

In Thursday's incident, the man presented a note demanding money and had a handgun stuck in his waistband. He fled on foot with an undetermined amount of money, the FBI said.

Police said the robbery method was similar to the holdup last month in Suwanee, where a man with a similar description walked in with a concealed handgun on his hip and demanded money.

Suwanee police Capt. Clyde Byers previously said the bandit was distinctive for his age.

"He looks like a grandpa," he said. "What is somebody his age out doing this for? He's supposed to be in retirement. He's supposed to be fishing."

The FBI also linked the bandit to two robberies of the same bank last month - the First Tennessee Bank in Knoxville.

Suwanee police Sgt. Shane Edmisten said the same man is suspected of robbing a bank on Sept. 20 in Covington, Ga., an Atlanta suburb.
