BRASELTON - Friends of the Braselton-West Jackson Library recently heard about the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) from noted author, Dr. Carol Holzhalb.

Holzhalb is a Jackson County native and Jefferson High School graduate. She introduced her book, Super CCC, as "ordinary people loving extraordinary things in that kids benefit profoundly to know about their grandparents' lives."

Relying on four primary resources for research, she described the CCC as one of the most popular programs of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal, lasting from 1933 until the onset of World War II. Frances Perkins, Roosevelt's secretary of labor, envisioned the program to "employ boys to improve the infrastructure of the United States." They learned pre-engineering, emergency management, soil conservation, park construction, reforestation, water and sewage systems and built 120,000 miles of roads. Based on a military model, the CCC employed more than 3.4 million boys during its existence.
