Nutt reflects on season, looks to next

By
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - After losing to No. 6 Wisconsin in the Capital One Bowl, Arkansas coach Houston Nutt said it's hard to say who will be the No. 12 Razorbacks' starting quarterback next season.

``Put them out there and let's go,'' Nutt said at a news conference Thursday. ``Put them out there and let's see who is going to come to the top. Let's see who is going to create some separation.''

Both Casey Dick and Mitch Mustain played in the Razorbacks' loss Monday in Orlando, Fla. And both had trouble moving the ball against the Badgers' offense Dick was 9-of-21 for 98 yards; Mustain was 5-of-10 for 41 yards. Each had one interception.

Nutt said maturity might play a part in Dick's and Mustain's performances.

``We are going to put a lot on our quarterback. Not that he has to be Superman every play because you have Darren McFadden and Felix Jones,'' Nutt said. ``It's great to have two 1,000-yard rushers but as we all know, you have to be able to throw the ball, too.''

Overall, Nutt said both the quarterbacks and the receivers need to get better in the offseason.

``We won the stat sheet but we don't go by that,'' Nutt said of the bowl game. ``I don't know how we lost that ball game. You got to make a field goal; you got to make a catch to keep the chains going. You can't have three and outs. We were right there from being 13-1 in my mind.''

Arkansas finished the season at 10-4, with all four losses at the hands of top 10 teams. That served as a marked improvement for the Razorbacks, who suffered a 4-7 season last year.

After a season-opening loss to Southern California, the Razorbacks battled back for 10 wins, something Nutt said he was proud of.

``To come back and win 10 straight, I'm proud because of the character. I'm proud because of the not giving up,'' Nutt said. ``That is a lesson they will take with them for the rest of their lives.''

With the season now over, Nutt said his focus would turn toward keeping his players from jumping to the NFL. He said he would fly to see defensive lineman Jamaal Anderson, as well as talk to players Marcus Harrison and Marcus Monk.

``I can't lose Marcus Monk,'' Nutt said. ``He's a great football player, a great person. ... He has tremendous character and made a lot of big plays for us. Jamaal Anderson led the SEC in sacks. All these guys have a chance and they are being talked to. So I have to go talk to them.''
