Jackson fails in bid for Ga. Democratic Party chair

By by The Associated Press
ATLANTA - A former state Sen. from northeast Georgia failed Saturday in her bid to become chairman of the Democratic Party of Georgia.

Carol Jackson was one of six candidates for the post. Former state Rep. Jane Kidd of Athens was picked for the job and will replace Bobby Kahn.

Kidd, who served as representative from from 2004 to 2006, said her first priority will be fundraising to create organized committees in counties where they don't exist.

"It means all the world to a candidate" to have organized committees, she said in a telephone interview.

The 53-year-old mother of two said her experience in local and state government, as well as her loss last year in the Senate race in Athens to Republican Bill Cowsert, taught her a lot about what gets a candidate elected.

"You learn a lot when you lose a race," she said.

In the November election, Kidd saw the district redrawn by Republicans after she announced her candidacy. They split Democratic-leaning Athens in half, dividing it between more GOP-friendly suburbs. Cowsert took 55 percent of the vote in that race.

Before the election, Kidd had said that if she won the state seat, she would move quickly to introduce a constitutional amendment on redistricting, creating a nonpartisan commission to recommend new political maps for state lawmakers and members of Congress every 10 years.
