Lewis, Yellow Jackets brace for Troy's 'daddy spread' attack

By The Associated Press

Georgia Tech took its first win of the year Saturday against Samford and its spread offense, but coach Chan Gailey said Tuesday that was "kind of the baby spread" when compared with this week's challenge from another Alabama team.

Troy will test Georgia Tech's defense Saturday with what Gailey says is a grown-up version of the spread attack.

"This is the daddy spread stuff here," Gailey said.

Troy lists four receivers and one running back in its starting offense. Even the running back, Josh Allen, is a converted receiver who still wears No. 80. That's a lot of high numbers on the field at the same time, and the intent is to put big numbers on the scoreboard.

The Yellow Jackets (1-1) easily survived last week's challenge, beating Samford 38-6 as two Tech defensive backs returned interceptions for touchdowns for the first time in 40 years. Jamal Lewis had a 97-yard return and another safety, Djay Jones, added a 29-yard return for a touchdown.

Troy (1-1) caught the attention of Tech's players in its 24-17 loss at No. 9 Florida State.

Tech's starters were pulled early in the easy win over Samford, giving them time to catch scores posted of other games, including Troy's surprising showing against Florida State.

"I noticed the score during halftime," Lewis said. "I was like, gosh!"

Troy coach Larry Blakeney said his players should have gained confidence from the strong effort against Florida State.

"The message that we send is 'Y'all better get ready,'" Blakeney said. "I wish we could sneak up on all of them a little bit. We're pretty good in some areas, and we're fast, but we're not deep enough yet."

Troy quarterback Omar Haugabook completed 29 of 46 passes for 219 yards but only one touchdown against the Seminoles. He threw three interceptions, but the game was tied 10-10 through three quarters.

"We've not played anybody who does what they do to the extent they do it," Gailey said, noting the Trojans may use formations without a running back.

"They've been very successful throwing the football in their first two games," Gailey said. "We'll have to change some of our matchup situations. They do create problems by spreading you out, but hopefully we create problems by bringing more than they can block."

Lewis and Jones each are juniors who are starting for the first time. Safety was a major concern following the departures of 2005 starters Chris Reis and Dawan Landry. The lack of experience became even more obvious when projected starter Joe Gaston suffered a season-ending knee injury in spring practice.

Gaston's injury led Tech coaches to move Lewis from cornerback to safety, and so far the adjustment has been smooth.

"I just think we are younger than those (2005 starters), but we also learned a lot from them," Lewis said. "They were very knowledgeable as far as the game goes, they taught us a lot to be able to come out here and start this year and help the defense and the team as a whole."

The last time Tech had two interceptions returned for touchdowns in a game was 1966 against Tulane, when Bell Eastman and Giles Smith had returns for 99 and 40 yards, respectively.

Lewis' 97-yard return was the fourth-longest in school history.

"Those were tremendously big plays in the ballgame," Gailey said. "The thing that does is I hope it gives our guys more and more confidence. ... When they make big plays, I know last year they really fed off each other as time went on and you'd like to see that happen again. We don't have nearly the experience yet, so you're looking to see something to raise the confidence level."

Lewis said he gained about 10 pounds to prepare for more run-defense responsibility. He said big hits are a highlight, but he said it's difficult to top the thrill of an interception return for a touchdown.

"I really like taking one to the house," Lewis said. "It feels good as far as the crowd and getting your teammates riled up."
