School janitor says she made up rape claim

<p>An elementary school janitor who said she was attacked and raped at the school has admitted she made it all up.</p><p>Classes were canceled at Ellijay Elementary School last month after the report of the assault.</p><p>But upon further investigation, authorities realized Sharon Kendall's story was not true, said John Cagle, an agent with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.</p><p>Kendall, 44, recanted her story Thursday in Gilmer County Superior Court.</p><p>"She recanted her story about the attack, indicating that there was never an attacker, and her wounds had been self-inflicted," Cagle said.</p><p>In court, Kendall said she had been under a lot of stress and taking medication.</p><p>Kendall was sentenced to 10 years probation, 500 hours of community service and told to pay the school $8,000 in restitution. She must also pay back money that was donated to her by people who thought she had been raped, Cagle said.</p><p>Security was increased throughout the county in August after the Kendall said she was assaulted at the school in the early morning hours.</p><p>"The community needs to know there's not some rapist out here, running around and hiding in bushes at school," Cagle said.</p><p>___</p><p>HASH(0x1cd9b1c)</p>
