KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Tennessee defensive back Marsalous Johnson's suspension has been lifted after he missed four games for being charged with aggravated assault in July, coach Phillip Fulmer announced Monday.
Johnson, a redshirt freshman from Smyrna, was arrested after an off-duty Putnam County sheriff's deputy reported Johnson waved what he thought looked like a gun at him while driving on Interstate 40. Officers pulled over Johnson's vehicle and found a toy Uzi submachine gun under the passenger seat. The case is still pending in court.
``While the suspension has been hard on our team, we needed to make a point to Marsalous and the rest of the team that we expect them to conduct themselves at a high standard and be good representatives of our great university,'' Fulmer said.
Johnson is due back in court in October.
Johnson's return will be welcomed because the Volunteers have lost two defensive backs to injury.
Cornerback Inky Johnson was seriously hurt and had surgery on damaged blood vessels in his arm and shoulder area after being hit in the Air Force game. He is out for the season. Reserve defensive back Roshaun Fellows had surgery to repair a torn pectoral muscle.
No. 15 Tennessee travels to Memphis on Saturday.
