Umpire Layne injured when hit in head by broken bat

<p>Plate umpire Jerry Layne was injured Friday night when the barrel of a shattered bat hit him in the side of the head, and he was taken off the field on a stretcher loaded onto a cart.</p><p>Layne was moving his arms and talking when he left the field after being treated for 11 minutes. He was hurt during the eighth inning of the Florida Marlins' game against the Atlanta Braves.</p><p>After the game, Layne was in the umpires' locker room and was on his feet.</p><p>The injury occurred when Hanley Ramirez broke his bat grounding out to second base. The bat hit Layne in the left side of the head, and he staggered several steps before falling to the grass behind home plate.</p><p>Layne is in his 18th year in the major leagues.</p>
