When Florida coach Urban Meyer looks at quarterback Chris Leak's career and his performance in a new offense last season, he only finds one significant shortcoming.

"The only just criticism of Chris right now in my opinion is he hasn't won a championship," Meyer said Friday at Southeastern Conference media days.

Leak drew heat from media and fans last season while adapting to Meyer's offense, despite posting a career-high in completion percentage and a career-low in interceptions.

It wasn't a seamless transition for a school noted for Steve Spurrer-style offenses and a coach known for his prolific offenses. Leak's passing numbers went down, he was sacked 32 times in 12 games, and didn't always look comfortable in Meyer's spread-option offense.

But Meyer notes it can't all be pinned on Leak. Injuries to receivers Andre Caldwell, Dallas Baker and Jemalle Cornelius limited the passing game at times.

All three are back this season.

The Gators did finish strong offensively, scoring 34 points against Florida State and 31 against Iowa in the Outback Bowl. They won both games.

"You're always going to have some tough times playing an SEC schedule and trying to learn the offense on the go," Leak said. "I think our coaches and my teammates did a great job of just staying focused on the right things. The coaches made the adjustments for us. The players made the necessary adjustments."

Leak's 8,271 passing yards ranks third among active major college quarterbacks, behind only Notre Dame's Brady Quinn and Houston's Kevin Kolb. He's fourth on Florida's alltime charts.

Meyer said the legacies of Leak and the three Florida passers above him are not measured by yards.

"The reason Rex Grossman, Shane Matthews and Danny Wuerffel were great quarterbacks is because they've got a ring that says they're the best, not because they threw for a number of yards," Meyer said. "Chris's job is to go win the championship. The best thing going is that Chris agrees with that. That's all that matters, is find a way to win that championship."

If that's Leak's first priority this season, No. 2 according to Meyer might be to help mentor freshman Tim Tebow, a Parade All-American who is already second on the depth chart after enrolling early and going through spring practices.

"There's a very good relationship between Chris and Tim," Meyer said. "We've made that very clear to him over and over again that his responsibility is to develop the backup quarterback."
