Building permits down in Gainesville

By by Ken Stanford
GAINESVILLE - The number of building permits authorized in Gainesville and Hall County nosedived last month but the man in charge of the department that issues them says it's nothing to be worried about.

In the category we track most closely every month - new, single-family homes - there was only one okayed in the City of Gainesville, 92 in unincoporated Hall County.

That's a total of 93 for both entities. Usually, the Hall County numbers alone are in the triple-digits.

Construction activity for June was down across the board when compared to May and the rest of the year.

Lamar Carver, who runs Gaineville-Hall County Building Inspection Services, says the declines are in line with what occurred last year at this time, and are more seasonal than anything, allowing for vacations, etc.

Carver says permits are pending on a number of large projects which will probably skew the numbers the other way in the next month or so.
