UNDATED - Here is a summary of election returns from counties in the immediate Gainesville area (see separate stories for Hall County results):
FORSYTH
In Forsyth County, in the race for State Senator, 27th District, Jack Murphy received 50.73% of the vote, followed by Todd Tibbetts with 35.58% and Andrew Miller with 13.69%. In the race for State House, District 24, incumbent Tom Knox received 75% of the votes to Jason Martin's 25%. In County Commission races, District 1, incumbent Charlie Laughinghouse got 48%, Pete Amos 37% and Pam Bowman, 15%; in District 3, Jim Harrel got 43% of the vote, Jack Conway 39% and Bill Hatley 18%. In the Forsyth County Board of Education races, in District 1 incumbent Ann Crow got 54% to Ed Mitchell's 46%; and District 2, Mike Dudgeon got 54% of the vote, incumbent Luke Haymond, 46%.
BANKS
In Banks County, there will be a runoff in the Democratic Primary for County Commission Post 3 as James "Pat" Westmoreland, the incumbent, got 47% of the vote, to Harold Ivey's 33% and Craig McCrackin's 21%. In the race for County Commission Post 3 in the Republican Primary, Joe Barefoot got 54% of the vote to Ricky Simmons 46%.
HABERSHAM
In Habersham County, in the race for County Commissioner, Gerald Dunham received 54% of the vote to incumbent Lynne Dockery's 46Z%. In the County School Board races, Meredith McConnell defeated incumbent James Weidner 70% to 30%, and Pat Taylor received 57% to incumbent Michael Tench's 23% and Bruce Lewallen's 20%.
LUMPKIN
In Lumpkin County, where 72% of the voters requested Republican ballots, in the District Attorney, Enotah Judicial Circuit, Jim Hallman received 1,036 votes to incumbent Stan Gunter's 943 votes. (But, Hallman didn't get enough votes in the other counties in the circuit to win the overall race. See separate story.) In County Commission, District 4, Clarence Grindle got 1,185 votes to Fred Fister's 859 votes. In the Democratic Primary, in the 9th Congressional District Race, John Bradbury got 486 votes to Bob Longwith's 197.
BARROW
In Barrow County, in the Commission District 5 race, Billy Parks received 39% of the vote, incumbent David Dyer 34%, and John King 27%; in District 6, incumbent Ben Hendrix had 55% to David Thomas' 45%. In Board of Education, District 4, Larry Ballard got 55% to incumbent Beverly Kelley's 45%; in District 7, Daniel Cromer got 48% of the vote, Amy Osier 22%, Timothy Taylor Sr. 17%, and John Stevens 13%.
DAWSON
In Dawson County, in the Democratic Primary for 9th Congressional Seat, John Bradbury got 71% of the vote to Bob Longwith's 29%. In Republican races, for Northeastern Judicial Circuit D-A, incumbent Lee Darragh had 54% to Lisa Jones 46%. In Commission District 1, Gary Pichon got 60% to Dick Scharf's 40%; in District 3, Mike Conner received 54% to Lake Gibson's 35% and Troy Thompson's 11%. In Board of Education, At Large post, incumbent Will Wade got 64% to Bruce Roydes 36%.
JACKSON
Bruce Yates won District 3 seat on the Jackson Board of Commissioners over Warren Walker with almost 61 percent of the vote. Dwain Smith won the District 4 seat with over 76 percent over Hal Brain. Tim Brooks got over 68 percent of the vote to win Post 2 of the Jackson Board of Education over Marvin Sewell. Mark Musselwhite received just under 50 percent of Jackson County's vote for the 49th State Senate District over Lee Hawkins 30% and Jeff Williams 20%. And Liquor by the Drink was approved with over 58 percent of voters supporting the referrendum.
WHITE
In White County, county commissioner Dennis Bergin was defeated by Joe Campbell by about a 700-vote margin. In the only other contested local race in White County, incumbent county commissioner Craig Bryant was returned to office, besting Rick Yarbrough by just over a thousand votes.
