GAINESVILLE - The average price for a gallon of regular, unleaded in Gainesville is about a nickel lower than the record nationwide price for a gallon of gasoline reported Sunday.
That's based on a citywide survey of 17 outlets early Monday morning. The average price was $2.96 a gallon.
The AccessNorthGa.com survey included eight outlets on the northside of town, two in midtown, four on the southside and four on the westside.
The cheapest gasoline was on the southside and westside, were two Atlanta Highway outlets and one on Browns Bridge Road were selling regular, unleaded for $2.95. The highest was also on the westside. Two places had it for more than $3 a gallon... the only places in town where the survey found gasoline selling for $3 or more. Both were on Browns Bridge Road. The price at one was $3.02; at the other, it was $3.05.
The cheapest for the highest grade was $3.16. That was at one northside outlet. The highest was $3.29 at one place on the southside and one on the westside.
Overall, our survey found $2.99 to be the most common price for regular, unleaded among the 17 places we checked - seven were selling it for that. Three each had it for $2.96 and $2.95. At two outlets it was $2.97 and then there were the two $3+ places mentioned above.
According to the Lundberg Survey, the national average for self-serve regular stood Friday at $3.015. (See separate story.)
But, a new ABC News poll finds most Americans are coping with the higher prices, without changing their driving habits. Just ten percent said they'll drive less in the weeks ahead because of the price of gas. That's far fewer than said so during previous price spikes. The survey found Americans would drive significantly less only after gas reached $4.16 a gallon.
