FLOWERY BRANCH - Blackshear Place Baptist Church near Flowery Branch chose Sunday during Memorial Day weekend to break ground for a huge new addition.
The church celebrated the beginning of a 75,000-square-foot expansion which church officials will meet growing needs of the church.
In about 16 months, the new structure will house preschool and children's programs, a new lobby and a new media center at the church located at Atlanta Highway and Mundy Mill Road according to Pastor Jeff Crook.
"Also with this is a new whole front door look, we're hoping we're going to lead the way to make our exit look awesome," Crook said.
Crook said the expansion will enhance the church's role as a strong regional church.
Ninety-three year old deacon John McBrayer donned a hard hat, took one of the shovels and helped break ground as the oldest member present, joining the church 41 years ago in 1965.
"I think it's a good day and I think it's needed for the church and the community," he said.
