<p>A veteran monster truck driver died and two others were injured when a sport utility vehicle participating in a dirt track event struck bystanders in the pit area, authorities said Sunday.</p><p>Calvin Carrington, of Boston, Ga., was killed about 9:45 p.m. during the Darryl Starbird's 42nd Annual National Rod & Custom Car Show and Monster Truck Races on Saturday, Tulsa County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Tim Albin said.</p><p>Carrington, 49, was a veteran monster truck driver and the owner of Wildfire Motorsports Monster Truck race team, according to the Wildfire Motorsports Web site. Carrington started the team more than 15 years ago, according to the site.</p><p>The other bystander, identified as Shane Smith, was standing near Carrington beside a parked monster truck in a pit area, when the driver of the SUV lost control for unknown reasons and struck them.</p><p>Albin said Smith is in his 40s and lives out of state. Smith was hospitalized for treatment of injuries not believed to be life-threatening, Albin said.</p><p>The SUV's driver, David Wiloughby, 36, of Vera, also was taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries that didn't appear to be life-threatening, Albin said.</p><p>EMSA reported that all three men were taken to St. John Medical Center.</p><p>"It just looks, at this point in time, like he lost control of the vehicle and it careened into the pit area," Albin said.</p><p>Event officials said events at Expo Square usually are safe and free of accidents.</p><p>"It's just a tragic loss," said Chris Eaton, an event coordinator for Expo Square. "We do everything we can, from a safety standpoint, and unfortunately, sometimes it's not enough."</p><p>Concrete barriers and metal screens are in place to protect spectators during events such as the one Saturday, Eaton said.</p><p>Albin said the accident is under investigation by the Sheriff's Department, along with assistance from the Oklahoma Department of Transportation and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.</p><p>___</p><p>HASH(0x1cdbfb8)</p>
